Classical Guitar

My Knowledge of the Instrument

My History

How It All Began

My brother bought me a guitar for Christmas when I was nine years old, and after showing an aptitude for the instrument, I started lessons after about 3 months.  My first teacher was not very good, but after she left to live in London, I managed to find a fabulous teacher named Martin Glover.

I studied under Martin for about 5 years during which time I had a brief session with Oliver Hunt (Professor of Classical Guitar, London College of Music).  My technique was corrected and as a result, I enjoyed playing more as I found that my improved technique enabled me to play better and learn faster.

I achieved Grade 8 on the instrument at the age of 14, and although it was only occasionally utilised during my years as a military musician, it is something that I kept going for my own personal pleasure and something that I used to great effect when playing for weddings and social events once I left the military.

Lessons

What is involved

I usually start students off with a series of books called The Guitarist’s Way by Holley Music.  These books are a series of 4, which takes the student from absolute beginner to approximately Grade 3 standard.

I focus in the lesson on technique as well as note and rhythm reading, and as the student progresses, the opportunity to be entered for grades is available using the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) exam board or Trinity College.  There is no pressure to take exams however if you do not wish to do so.
