Theory

A Brief History And Implementation

My History

How It All Began

I studied at The Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall on a Pupil’s Course, followed later by a Sergeant’s Course and then a Band Sergeant Major’s Course.

All of these courses taught the theory of music from the very basic level to very advanced, with the Band Sergeant Major’s course, not only covering the principles of music but also arranging and composition, with me having to write a march by the end of the 7-week course!

This, of course, stood me in good stead, with me not only learning the ranges of all of the instruments of the military (concert) band, but being able to understand the practicalities of what each instrument is capable of, and how to write for it.

Lessons

What is involved

I am mainly called upon to teach the theory of music to those students who wish to progress from ABRSM Grade 5 to Grade 6 – 8 (no requirement for Trinity College).  The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music requires that Grade 5 Theory is passed “before” further practical progression can be taken.

I tend to incorporate the theory lessons into the practical lessons, with the occassional lesson given being dedicated to theory only.

Thus far I have never been asked to teach at Grade 6 level and above, as this is not needed to progress to the higher grades.
